Welcome to
A Women-led organization that shines a light on new works and innovative productions from underrepresented groups.
Celebrating the arts and independent theatre in New York City, we are a collaborative community of artists, generating bold new projects, providing an incubator for ideas and people, and pushing boundaries in the performing arts.
The primary goal of the Unscene Theatre Company is to create a space for artists to develop new works in the performing arts. We develop new play productions, organize stage readings, and improv showcases. We also offer writing workshops, master classes, and mentorships.

A rain-soaked night in a New York hospital waiting room sets the stage for Next of Kin, an intimate and emotionally raw drama about an encounter between Joyce Peters, a reticent mother estranged from her daughter, and Hannah Markovitz, a professor who has come to care deeply for that same young woman.
As Keira—Joyce’s daughter and Hannah’s student—lies in critical condition after an accident, the women are forced into unexpected proximity and frank conversation.
Over the course of eighteen hours, what begins as awkward tension develops into piercing vulnerability, as they confront grief, estrangement, identity, and the quiet ache of maternal failure.
Next of Kin deftly explores the complexities of chosen versus biological family, asking whether reconciliation is ever too late—or sometimes better left unspoken.
This is a story about caregiving at the edges of love, and the difficult decisions that arise when past wounds come face to face with fragile hope.
Unscene is proud to share information about our upcoming performances for Next of Kin, starring Susan Estes and Joss Wilmouth.
The play will be performed August 18th, August 19th, August 20th, August 22nd, and August 23rd at the Chain Theater’s Brick Studio.
Tickets start at $20 and we are delighted to accept donations to support our independent theater work.
Set in the mid-West in the early 20th century,Trifles is a murder mystery that offers a thought-provoking exploration of women’s rights.
In January 2025, to mark the anniversary of the Women’s March, the Unscene Theatre Company offered a heart-felt production of Susan Glaspell’s timeless play at the Center at West Park, followed by a talkback with specials guests.
